The preparation for the 2020 season is like no other I’ve ever had. Both the test days and the race days had to be canceled due to coronavirus. But the day will come when we hit the racetrack again and step on the gas. Even if there ends up only being one, two or no test days, you have to be able to deliver 100% at the start of the season. And that is only possible if you are mentally and physically fit. That’s why my everyday life consists of a lot of training: cycling, running and crossfit. You can go out and train alone. I’ve been doing it more intensely now than ever before because I can just use the time.
We released the new Mercedes AMG GT3 EVO this year. The car has been improved in some areas, especially aerodynamically. Small things that weren’t quite optimal with the last car were improved – although the last car was of course one of the most successful GT3 cars ever. In addition, the drivability has improved and the handling for the mechanics. The mileage for engine transmissions etc. has also been extended – this means that the cost reduction on the part of AMG was also taken into account.
One of my top 3 favorite routes is the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria. My fan club is also based there so the races are sort of like home races for me. The Sachsenring is also very cool. I was particularly successful at the Nürburgring. I really like the route, I feel like I’m in my living room. I have been racing on the ring for 25 years now and have always taken trophies home.
Apart from the racing calendar, I love Bathurst, Suzuka in Japan and the Nordschleife – I think this route is pretty high up for every driver.
Helmets and their designs are like the faces of the drivers. They are quite personal, showing traces of the past and are individual to each person. Helmet designs evolve over time.
For me, however, elements remain that have been there since the very beginning. This year, I have taken my inspiration for my helmet design from the car. Consequently, the elements and colours complement each other perfectly and make a better and more harmonious whole.
